Altar

Altar – Jochen Pechau, 1980

In 1979, the artist Jochem Pechau from Cologne made the altar of tuff. The plate of the altar rests on four feet. The column under the plate is carved in relief with a “vas-vitae” theme showing a kantharos (ancient Greek drinking vessel with handles). The animals displayed in the relief, pigeon, snail, cicada, and mouse, are symbols of animate Creation. Even the grapes with trailing vine tendrils hold meaning; Jesus says: “I am the vine, you are the branches.”
